I’m not sure if I liked it as much as I do now back then, but it’s definitely a Hidden Gem. I hate being repetitive so I’ll try not to, but Voodoo slays. The lyrics are everything, has anyone figured out how many times she actually says the word ‘baby’? But now the more I listen to it, the more I start to respect it as a great single. I thought of Baby always being a great album filler. The lyrics are so hypnotizing, another song that I believe showcases Ashanti’s songwriting abilities (you might read this a lot lol). Rescue is a very good song but it drags, which means it’s really long so its a track that I find myself skipping pretty often, but when I’m in the mood, I listen to the song with the 3:05 long instrumental. I could definitely see this being a single, but based off the vibe of the Ashanti era I cant see a visual being put to this. Its basically a song that I would consider a ‘Hidden Gem’. There was a point in time where Call would be the only thing I would listen to.Īshanti is such a great songwriter and I think that Scared really shows that. Call was a track that I couldn’t much appreciate back then and I’m not really sure why. Basically a set up for the next song, Call. Narrative Call is a skit of Ashanti telling a short story with an ex.

I wouldn’t so much consider this track as a sequel to Always On Time, I don’t think any song that Ashanti & Ja has made or will make in the future can be a continuation of their past songs, they’re all unique in their own way. Its slowly getting played out but its still a track that I would select as a first listen before putting my phone on shuffle. Leaving a.k.a Always On Time Part II was a song that I always loved also. It’s considered a cheesy/corny song to a lot of people, but I love it. Happy was a song that always got me in a happy mood, no pun. Well not so much grow on me, I felt as if I was being put into a ‘its typical’ type of group if I were to just automatically say “I love Foolish!” if someone were to ask what my favorite Ashanti song was, you know what I mean? So due to that I would never really give it much attention, I would play it all the time but it wouldn’t come to slay me the way it does until maybe 2011 or 2012… lol. I enjoy the intro to Ashanti.įoolish, believe it or not was a song that had to grow on me. I feel that these two intros specifically are sort of reminding the listener on who Ashanti is and what she has done. This album & Chapter II have intros that compliment her past songs. I think that what makes Ashanti unique is the way her intros are set up. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 selling 503,000 copies it’s first week. Ja Rule)Īshanti was released April 2nd, 2002. The album also won Ashanti her first Grammy Award for “Best Contemporary R&B Album”.Ĭheck out my Track-by-Track Review for ‘Ashanti’ Below! The album was lead by ‘Foolish’, the mega-single that spent 10 consecutive weeks atop Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart. Selling 503,000 its first week, placed her at a high caliber making her the first debut female artist to sell so much their first week and the only R&B artist to do so. Released on Murder Inc./Def Jam, the self titled album is marked as Ashanti’s most successful album.
